PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide nickel oxide powder having a low sulfur content and a large specific surface area and suitable for use as a material of electronic components, and a method for industrially and stably manufacturing the same. SOLUTION: The nickel oxide powder obtained by a manufacturing method including a step of obtaining anhydrous nickel sulfate by calcining nickel sulfate hydrate at a temperature of 150-600°C, and a step of obtaining nickel oxide powder by firing the obtained anhydrous nickel sulfate at a temperature of 780-900°C has the sulfur content of 200-1,000 ppm by mass and the specific surface area of 4-9 m<SP>2</SP>/g.
