The invention relates to a device intended to float at the surface of a water plane and essentially capable of collecting and/or retaining floating waste such as hydrocarbons at the surface and/or close to the surface of the water plane, wherein said device comprises a continuous vertical surface (1) vertically maintained in the water essentially for recovering and/or retaining floating waste. The invention comprises vertically maintaining said surface (1) in the water using flotation means including at least one member such a beam (2) that is essentially perpendicular to said surface (1) on one side thereof and on an appropriate length, wherein at least some adjacent members such as beams are connected together.
