PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device and an image display device in which the increase in lamp current is prevented, by suppressing reduction of lamp voltage caused by a projection formed in a lamp electrode, while taking into consideration the history of lamp lighting conditions at the time of stable lighting, and reducing stresses and losses, and prolonging of the lifetime of the lamp. SOLUTION: The electric discharge lamp lighting device has a power conversion circuit, consisting of a step-down chopper circuit 1, and a polarity inversion circuit 2 in which output from the step-down chopper circuit 1 is converted into a rectangular wave alternating voltage and made incident into the electric discharge lamp La, and a memory part 41f in which output history of the power conversion circuit at a previous lamp lighting time is stored. In a control circuit 4, by on/off controlling switching elements Q1 to Q5 of the step-down chopper circuit 1 and the polarity inversion circuit 2, based on the history of the memory part 41f, the output of the power conversion circuit is changed during a prescribed period, from the start of the lamp lighting until the stabilization of the lamp lighting is reached, and then the lamp voltage V1a is made to rise.
