PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a high quality image reading result by making a relation between the last image reading position before the suspension and the first image reading position after resumption relatively suitable, even if suspension and resumption processing is performed in the middle of a reading operation using multiple pulses. SOLUTION: When a reading operation is suspended because of a lack of a free space at a buffer, a line corresponding to the time of the last multiple pulse output is read, among multiple pulses outputted one by one whenever an encoder edge starts. Then, conveyance of a CIS (Contact Image Sensor) is resumed when the free space of the buffer is recovered. However, the reading of an image is resumed from a first multiple pulse output timing, after the CIS exceeds the last reading line before suspension and the encoder edge is started. Since the edge rising position is the same before suspension and during resumption, reading can be resumed at a suitable position where should be resumed, thereby, disturbance in an image can be suppressed.
