PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the radiation of near-field light from parts other than the sharp end of a near-field light generating plate. SOLUTION: The heat assisted magnetic head having a medium facing surface comprises a waveguide whose end face is exposed to the medium facing surface, a conductive near-field light generating plate disposed on the medium facing surface of the waveguide so that its main surface faces a medium, and a conductive near-field light scattering plate disposed on the medium facing surface of the heat assisted magnetic head so that its main surface faces the medium. A sharp end is provided on one end of the near-field light generating plate in the view from a direction vertical to the medium facing surface; the near-field light scattering plate is disposed along the other end on the opposite side of the sharp end of the near-field light generating plate in the view from the direction vertical to the medium facing surface, and the width of the near-field light scattering plate in a first direction orthogonal to a direction connecting the sharp end of the near-field light generating plate and the other end is wider than the width in the first direction of the near-field light generating plate in the view from the direction vertical to the medium facing surface.
