摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact and inexpensive electromagnetic wave modulator whose modulating operation time can optionally be varied within a range of 10<SP>-6</SP>to 10<SP>-9</SP>sec., and enables the rising and the falling waveform of an electromagnetic wave to be freely set. SOLUTION: An electromagnetic wave 10a to be modulated (with a wavelength of 1×10<SP>-3</SP>to 1×10<SP>-4</SP>m) emitted from an electromagnetic wave source 13 is made incident on an Si substrate 7 through an off-axis parabolic mirror 11. When a flash lamp 1 emits pulse light 6 as exciting light, the reflection factor of the Si substrate 7 becomes large and the electromagnetic wave to be modulated is reflected by the Si substrate 7, so that the reflected electromagnetic wave 10b is output to an object 14 to be irradiated with the electromagnetic wave through the off-axis parabolic mirror 12. Since the flash lamp is used as an exciting light source, the electromagnetic wave modulator can be made compact and inexpensive by using a pulse laser.
