PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a refractometer having a decreased manufacturing cost. SOLUTION: A refractometer (1) includes a prism (2) having an interface (2A) contacting a sample (20), a light source (4, 24) for emitting a light to enter the incident plane (2B) of the prism toward the interface, and an image sensor (6) for receiving the light reflected from the interface and leaving the outgoing surface (2C) of the prism. Only the prism is provided as an optical element in the optical path between the light source and the image sensor. Preferably, a slit (5) is disposed between the light source and the incident plane of the prism, the light source (24) has a flattened light emission surface (26), the light emission surface is bonded to the incident plane of the prism through the slit, the image sensor is bonded to the outgoing surface of the prism, and the light source is LED.
