PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To implement a highly accurate air-fuel ratio control regardless of an operational status, in an internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: A plurality of cylinders are arrayed in a right bank 13 and a left bank 12 as cylinder groups. Exhaust pipes 57, 58 are respectively connected to the cylinder groups of the banks 12, 13. Front stage three-way catalyst 59, 60 and control valves 64, 65 are respectively disposed on the exhaust pipes 57, 58. A communicating pipe 63 connects the exhaust pipes 57, 58, and A/F sensors 88, 89 are respectively disposed on the exhaust pipes 57, 58 to the upstream of the front stage three-way catalysts 59, 60. An ECU 81 performs a main air-fuel ratio learning control for each of the cylinder groups in the banks 12, 13, based on detection results of the A/F sensors 88, 89, and performs the main air-fuel ratio learning control depending on opening/closing states of the control valves 64, 65.
