A method for preventing IGMP message attack includes the following two stage step: preventing the attack based on IGMP message source IP address; preventing the attack based on IGMP message multicast group IP address. Also, the present invention provides an apparatus for preventing IGMP message attack. By two stage preventing attack for the source address and the multicast group IP of IGMP message, the embodiments of the invention effectively solve a large number of the occurred malicious IGMP message in short time period that may result in the abnormal problem of the network.
