PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing carbon fiber having good air-permeability and draining property and suitably usable for a catalyst layer of solid polymer fuel cells.

SOLUTION: The method for producing carbon fiber includes a step A in which a compound having an aromatic ring is electrolytically polymerized to form a fibrillated polymer and a step B in which the fibrillated polymer is baked to produce the carbon fiber, wherein the electrolytic polymerization step A is performed while circulating a polymer solution, which includes a compound having an aromatic ring.
