PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve cooling efficiency, and to prevent a foreign matter, such as dust, from entering the inside of a carriage in a flat head type image reader reading an original by allowing a carriage to travel. SOLUTION: The carriage 30 of the image reader has a fluorescent lamp 22 as a light source, a condensing lens 27, and a CCD 28. In a housing 41 of the carriage 30, an inlet 31 is formed. The inlet 31 has a fan 33 for sending air to the inside of the carriage 30 and also has a dustproof filter 32. In the housing 41, there are an outlet 34 for exhausting air supplied from the inlet 31 and a read opening 45 for enabling light that comes from the fluorescent lamp 22 and is reflected by the original to be read to enter.
