PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a perpendicular magnetic recording head which can reduce the Edge Write magnetic field and improve the resistance to external magnetic fields. SOLUTION: The perpendicular magnetic recording head has a magnetic layer 24 having a main pole exposed facing the recording medium M, a return yoke layer 27 formed on the magnetic layer 24 via a non-magnetic layer, and coil layers 18, 23 to produce a recording magnetic field on the magnetic layer 24 and the return yoke layer 27. The return yoke layer 27 is exposed to the medium facing surface in the width W<SB>1</SB>smaller than the width W<SB>2</SB>of a projecting area 27e covering the coil layers in the track width direction in a plan view and gradually widens toward the inside in the track width direction.
