<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase the rate of hydrogen generation by suppressing heterogenization and formation of a magnesium hydroxide film (Mg(OH)<SB>2</SB>film) formed on a surface of a hydrogen storage material by a chemical reaction such as a hydrolysis reaction. <P>SOLUTION: The method for generating hydrogen is provided including a step of obtaining a product by applying mechanical energy to a material composition containing magnesium-containing particles 11 comprising metal magnesium particles and/or magnesium hydride particles and oxide particles 10 comprising one or more selected from TiO<SB>2</SB>, SiO<SB>2</SB>and Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>, and a step of forming hydrogen by hydrolyzing the product.
