PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a barrier mechanism and a lens from collision or interference in a lens barrel. SOLUTION: The lens barrel includes: lens groups 60 and 90; a barrier mechanism 120 having barrier vanes 121 disposed further forward than the lens G1 in the direction of an optical axis and opens or closes an aperture 64a; and drive mechanisms 100 and 110 that move the lens groups to a collapsed position or an initial position for photographing, and zoom drives or focus drives while having an initial position as its starting point. For photographing, the drive mechanism 110 moves the lens in the direction of the optical axis, including a range where it projects further forward than the barrier vanes 121 in the direction of the optical axis. Before the lens reaches the initial position for photographing, the barrier mechanism 120 moves the barrier vanes 121 to a fully opened position. Accordingly, even if the lens is drawn out from the initial position so as to project beyond the barrier vanes, the lens and barrier vanes are prevented from striking against or interfering with each other.
