The invention includes a plurality of arrays (204, 206, 604) of semiconductor light sources (208) from which a wavelength may be selected, either specifically, or by combination of specific semiconductor light sources (208), for impinging on passing product and at least one array (604) of semiconductor light sources (208) of wavelength and intensity equal to the plurality of arrays (204, 206) impinging on a background surface (302) for detection and comparison.
