PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide fumaric acid derivatives and ophthalmic lenses using the same, and more specifically to provide fumaric acid diester having a hydrophilic group and a silicon-containing alkyl group within a molecule, and contact lenses or intraocular lenses using the above diester. SOLUTION: The fumaric acid derivative exerts superior oxygen permeability by including a silicon-containing alkyl group in its molecular structure, and further exerts improved compatibility with another hydrophilic monomer by including a hydrophilic substituent in the same molecule. When the ophthalmic lens formed through polymerizing a monomer composition containing the fumaric acid derivative is constituted as, for example, a hydrous lens, the fumaric acid derivative has excellent compatibility with a hydrophilic monomer to be used together and is combined in various mixing ratios to give a lens having high oxygen permeability and transparency without depending on a water content.
