A fuel cell system (10) having a cooling water pump (24) provided in cooling water piping (22) that sends cooling water to a fuel cell (12) and sending the cooling water under pressure, fuel gas supply piping (30) connected to the fuel cell (12) and supplying fuel gas to the fuel cell (12), fuel gas circulation piping (32) connected to both the fuel cell (12) and the fuel gas supply piping (30) and circulating fuel gas, discharged from the fuel cell (12), in the fuel gas supply piping (30), and a fuel gas pump (42) provided in the fuel gas circulation piping (32) and sending under pressure the fuel gas, discharged from the fuel cell (12), to the fuel gas supply piping (30). After operation of the fuel cell (12) is stopped, the fuel gas, discharged from the fuel cell (12), is sent under pressure by the fuel gas pump (42), and cooling water is send under pressure by the cooling water pump (24) to cool the fuel cell (12) to thereby reduce the temperature of the fuel cell to a level lower than the temperature of the fuel gas pump. |
