An instrument housing for mounting components behind the dashboard of a vehicle comprises a base having a recess for receiving an instrument and a series of apertures for receiving lamp sockets, each aperture being surrounded by an integral tubular shield projecting from the opposite side of the base to the recess and electrical connection between the lamp sockets and an external electrical supply being provided by a printed circuit on the base. A sheet of copper 12, Fig. 11, coated with a protective layer of solder 20 on one surface and adhesive 22 on the other, and having an oblongshaped area removed so as to allow a recessed area 16, Figs. 2, 6, to extend through the sheet, is placed on top of the base 18 in a press, Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown), the base being provided with reinforcing ribs 15, Fig. 2. Pressure is applied to the heated die 30 and the sheet is firmly adhered to the base, at the same time outlining the printed circuit in the manner shown in Fig. 11. A secondary operation is performed in which the socket holes 36 are punched out together with the connector openings 38 and instrument mounting apertures 40. Finally, the unstamped portions of the conductive sheet of copper are removed. |
