PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably carry out the width reduction of a hot slab using a plate width pressing machine by preventing the slip in reducing the width of the hot slab. SOLUTION: A die for reducing the width of the hot slab comprises a lower parallel portion 10 on the exit side of the hot slab in the advancing direction, an intermediate tilted portion 20 which is connected to the lower parallel portion and is widened toward the inlet side of the hot slab, an intermediate parallel portion 30 which is connected to the intermediate tilted portion and is nearly parallel with the side surface of the hot slab, and an inlet side tilted portion 40 which is connected to the inlet side end of the intermediate parallel portion in the advancing direction and is widened toward the inlet side of the hot slab, wherein the intermediate tilted portion comprises a first tilted portion 22 which is connected to the lower parallel portion and is widened toward the inlet side of the hot slab with an angleϕ, and a second tilted portion 24 which is connected to the inlet side end of the first tilted portion in the advancing direction of the hot slab and is widened with an angleα<SB>1</SB>, where the angleϕof the first tilted portion should be smaller than the angleα<SB>1</SB>of the second tilted portion.
