Electrolyte is propelled through a fuel cell by the flow of gas leaving the cell. In a first embodiment, Fig. 1a, gas leaves the cell 8 via outlet 6 and passes through valve 5 to chamber 3, propelling electrolyte from chamber 3 through the cell to chamber 2, the gas in chamber 2 escaping via valve 4 and outlet 7. When chamber 2 is full the valves are changed so that gas now flows from the cell into chamber 2, propelling electrolyte back through the cell to chamber 3. In a second embodiment, Fig. 2, gas from the cell flows via outlet 11 and valve 12 to chamber 13 propelling electrolyte via valve 14, cell 10 and valve 15 to chamber 16. When chamber 16 is full the valves are changed so that the electrolyte flows back to chamber 13 via valve 14, cell 10 and valve 15 in that order, thereby maintaining unidirectional flow of electrolyte through the cell. In a third embodiment, Fig. 3, gas from the cell flows via outlet 18 and valve 19 into chamber 20, propelling electrolyte into chamber 23 via valve 21, and cell 22. When chamber 23 is full, electrolyte is allowed to drain from it back into chamber 20. In a fourth embodiment, Fig. 4, gas from the cell flow via outlet 28 and valve 29 to chamber 30 propelling electrolyte into chamber 31. When chamber 31 is full the electrolyte is allowed to drain back into chamber 30 via the cell. In a fifth embodiment, Fig. 5, electrolyte flows continuously through the cell from chamber 38 to chamber 41. When chamber 41 is full it is allowed to drain at a rate quicker than it is being filled into chamber 37 and gas from the cell is allowed to flow via outlet 35 and valve 36 t to chamber 37, propelling electrolyte back into chamber 38 at a rate quicker than that a which it is being emptied. The valves may be magnetic. The gas may be one which contains an inert fraction.
