The invention relates to a process for the production of a-olefin low polymers with a chromium catalyst containing a pyrrole compound, particularly, a process for the production of a-olefin low polymers such as 1-hexene from a-olefins such as ethylene which comprises using as the polymerization catalyst a chromium catalyst composed of a chromium compound (a), a pyrrole compound (b) and an aluminum-containing compound (c), wherein the concentration of pyrrole dimer contained in the pyrrole compound (b) is at most 2wt% based on the pyrrole compound (b).
