<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical disk drive for highly accurately setting the optimum value of laser power when recording data on a high density optical disk, and its recording power setting method. <P>SOLUTION: On the optical disk, test signals of which erasing power Pe is fixed and recording power Pw is changed are recorded. The recorded signals are reproduced and a β value indicating the asymmetry of reproducing signals to each recording power is acquired. Then, for the optical disk of a high density and a large capacity represented by a blu-ray disc, an area called an APC area provided in a part of a recording area configured by being divided into many areas by a prescribed information recording unit (RUB) specific to the disc is utilized especially, and by the averaging for the β value, the optimum recording power Pwo is set further. Here, different test signals are recorded and the erasing power Pe to be fixed is determined from the measured result of a modulation degree M value, or follows strategy information predetermined for the optical disk.
