PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem with existing optical disk and reproducing/recording systems which is the potential incompatibility between drives of different versions, for example a drive of a previous version with a previous set of capabilities may have difficulty interacting with a medium that has interacted with a drive including at least one capability from a subsequent set of capabilities. SOLUTION: A PAC (Physical Access Control) including segment information on a medium, such as a high density optical disc, is provided, and apparatus and methods are for recording data to and reproducing data from the medium using the PAC including the segment information. Also, the PAC including the segment information recorded thereon is provided in order to improve data protection, data management and reproduction compatibility, avoid destruction of data, and/or reduce unnecessary repetitive operations.
