The invention comprises fluorindine dyes of formula wherein X and Y are o-phenylene groups which may be substituted or 1,2- or 2,3-naphthylene groups, R and R 3 are alkyl or substituted alkyl having up to 6 C atoms, R 1 is C 1-4 alkyl or benzyl, m and n are each 0 or 1 the sum of m and n being 1 or 2 and Z is an anion. The dyes are prepared by quaternation of the corresponding fluorindine dyes and are used to colour polyacrylonitrile fibres in blue shades.
