A hot cathode light source apparatus, a backlight unit having the same, and a method for manufacturing the backlight unit are provided to implement excellent light emitting efficiency by optical-designing the hot cathode light source apparatus considering a characteristic diffusion length. A light source body(110) has a discharge space(120) on which discharge gas is injected. A hot cathode electrode(150) is exposed to the light source body to apply a discharge voltage to the discharge gas. An aspect ratio of width/height in the discharge space is 2.5 to 4. An upper plate and a lower plate of the light source body are faced each other to have a discharge space therein. The light source body has a barrier rib(130) for dividing an inner space of the faced upper and lower plates. A reflector is formed on the lower portion of the light source body to be separated from the light source body. An inverter applies a discharge voltage to the hot cathode electrode.
