In a method of modifying a message transmitted from a sending party to a receiving party through a communications network, the message is intercepted in the communications network. A plurality of data channels are selected on the basis of the sending party or the receiving party, each channel comprising a plurality of data items and each being accessible by third parties for the placement of data items. One or more predetermined rules are applied to at least some of the selected data items so as to identify a particular item, and data derived from the identified item is appended to the intercepted message. The system might be used, for example, in advertising. |
