A connector such as a rivet 100 for use in a tool such as scissors or pliers includes a body 102 having a first or head portion 104 and a second or shank portion 106 integrally formed with the first portion 104. The first portion 104 has a first hardness and the second portion 106 has a second different hardness. In an embodiment, the first portion 104 has a first hardness of at least 40 Rockwell C and the second portion 106 has a second hardness that is less than the first hardness. In another embodiment, the second portion 106 has a hardness of 30 Rockwell C or less and the first portion 104 has a greater hardness than the hardness of the second portion 106. The connector 100 is made using a method including the steps of forming a body having first and second portions 104, 106, and induction hardening the first portion 104 to a hardness of at least 40 Rockwell C or the second portion 106 to a hardness of 30 Rockwell C or less. |
