A substrate for a surface light source, a surface light source apparatus having the same, and a backlight unit are provided to improve the uniformity of illuminance by preventing the movement of mercury due to gravity. A light source body is provided with a plurality of discharge spaces(140) therein. Discharge gas is injected into the discharge spaces. An electrode(150) applies a discharge voltage to the discharge gas. The discharge space is formed along a gravity direction. A cross-section of a lower portion of the discharge space is smaller than that of an upper portion of the discharge space. The cross-section of the discharge space is continuously decreased from the upper section to the lower section. Alternatively, the cross-section of the discharge space is discontinuously decreased from the upper section to the lower section. A width of the lower portion of the discharge space is less than that of the upper portion of the discharge space. A depth of the lower portion of the discharge space is less than that of the upper portion of the discharge space.
