PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain smooth image display by suppressing an image persistence phenomenon induced by difference in luminance degradation caused by the temperature in an organic EL element.

SOLUTION: A degradation amount in the emission luminance of each display pixel is detected by an emission luminance change detection unit 508 based on the detection output of each light receiving element in a light receiving element group 38, as well as a change amount in temperature in each pixel is detected by a temperature change detection unit 511 based on the detection output of a temperature detection unit 40 that uses the same organic EL element as in the pixel as a detection element. The emission luminance of the organic EL element is controlled so that the degradation amount of the luminance caused by the temperature of the organic EL element is fixed by reflecting the degradation amount in luminance of each display pixel on the change amount in temperature in each pixel by a data normalization processing unit 512.
