PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent decrease in the maximum number of recordable images or operational discomfort for a user caused by operation delay due to power consumption or control load for enabling a face detecting function all the time. SOLUTION: With respect to each image recorded on recording media 31, face information is confirmed in the reproduction mode. Face detection is performed on image data to which the face information is not added, and the image data with face information is recorded. When the face information is added to all images, the percentage of images in which there exist faces is calculated. When the percentage exceeds a face detecting flag threshold, the face detecting flag is set ON. When the percentage does not exceed the face detecting flag threshold, the face detecting flag is set OFF. The face detecting flag is stored in the flash memory portion of a memory 13. The face detecting flag is read from the flash memory portion of the memory 13 in the shooting mode at the next time.
