PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device for an internal combustion engine capable of appropriately controlling burned gas quantity (overlap period) even if ignition timing changes, reducing NOx without causing increase of HC and CO and improving fuel economy by reducing pumping loss as the result. SOLUTION: This control device estimates whole combustion corresponding period CP which is a period from ignition timing SA to combustion completion timing CAe, and controls a variable valve timing device (VVT) advance angle (burned gas quantity, overlap period, intake valve open timing) to make the estimated whole combustion corresponding period CP coincide with a fixed target whole combustion corresponding period CPtgt. The whole combustion corresponding period CP substantially keeps a one-to-one relation with VVT advance angle with which HC and CO<SB>2</SB>or the like start increasing even if ignition timing SA changes.
