PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable terminal apparatus or a key capable of holding a distance between the portable terminal apparatus and the key, which determines success/fail of authentication, at a fixed value even when a radio wave propagation environment is changed by dynamically setting a threshold for determining the success/fail of authentication between the portable terminal apparatus and the key to a value corresponding to the radio wave propagation environment. SOLUTION: The portable terminal apparatus 1 is provided with: an authenticating wireless control part 111 for performing wireless communication with the key 2; an authentication control part 113 for detecting the receiving intensity of a radio wave received from the key 2 by the authenticating wireless control part 111; a portable terminal control part 15 for controlling the portable terminal so as to perform prescribed processing in accordance with whether the receiving intensity detected by the authentication control part 113 is a certain threshold and more or not; and a threshold setting part 112 for setting the threshold for allowing the portable terminal control part 15 to perform the prescribed processing on the basis of the receiving intensity detected by the authentication control part 113 at an optional point of time.
