PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backlight equipped with a thermionic cathode fluorescent lamp which can lower a starting voltage. SOLUTION: The backlight 100 comprises a thermionic cathode fluorescent lamp 10, a housing 20, and a starting voltage lowering means 50 to lower a starting voltage of the thermionic cathode fluorescent lamp 10. The thermionic cathode fluorescent lamp 10 includes a bulb 12 in which a phosphor is formed in the inside, and a filament 14 that emits thermoelectrons, wherein the starting voltage lowering means 50 is realized by keeping thermionic cathode fluorescent lamps 10 arranged in the housing 20 so that a longitudinal direction 14a of a filament 14 may turn in a screen direction 40.
