PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a material for a liquid crystal alignment layer which causes no peeling of a layer nor scratch thereon during rubbing treatment even when baking is conducted at 200°C or lower temperature, and which can provide an excellent liquid crystal aligning property, and to provide the liquid crystal alignment layer which can be fabricated with the baking at 200°C or lower temperature, which is not peeled nor scratched and can provide an excellent liquid crystal aligning property, and a liquid crystal display element using the liquid crystal alignment layer. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal aligning agent includes at least one polymer out of a polyamic acid obtained with a polymerization reaction of a diamine component and a tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride component, or a polyimide obtained by dehydration cyclization of the polyamic acid, and is characterized in that a diamine represented by formula (3) is contained in the diamine component, wherein n is an integer of 1-20, and R<SB>3</SB>is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group.
