<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow a user to easily change the character size by a relatively easy key operation. <P>SOLUTION: In a portable terminal, characters are switched one after another by intermittenty depressing the same character key (a) to (d). The character size is automatically changed by long depression of the character key along with elapse of such continuous depression time (d) to (g). When key depression is stopped, the character size is defined as the relevant character size of the input character. Until a determinate operation such as conversion or selection of a character string is performed, the current character size is maintained for subsequent input characters (h) to (j). If the determinate operation such as conversion or selection of a character string is performed, the relevant character size is reflected on the converted or selected character string, and the size of the subsequent input characters is returned to a default size (k).
