A system for packaging fruit in cartons is disclosed. The fruit is packed into cartons having a packed weight in a predetermined weight range, wherein following stacking of the cartons on pallets, the pallets are loaded into containers for transport. The system comprises preselecting selected ones of trays from a defined set of trays for use with selected ones of predefined weight bands of fruit for a selected crop of fruit, packing the fruit in the selected ones of the trays according to weight band of fruit, placing the selected trays in the cartons whereby each and every carton has a packed weight in the predetermined weight range, irrespective of the weight band of fruit placed in that carton, and wherein the trays are sized so that two the trays will fit side by side within a retail display vehicle. This allows fruit in the trays to be displayed directly in the retail display vehicle and without the need to remove the fruit from the trays.
