PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and an apparatus for direct cooling of gradient coils in a MRI system. SOLUTION: A system for cooling a gradient coil assembly (50) of a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system includes a gradient coil (70, 74) having a first surface including a plurality of conductors and a plurality of inter-turn channels (78, 76). Each inter-turn channel (78, 76) is located between turns of the plurality of conductors. The system also includes a seal layer (68, 72) applied to the first surface of the gradient coil (70, 74) to seal the inter-turn channels (78, 76).
