PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To switch a tracking target automatically and smoothly. SOLUTION: An object image within an image-taking screen page of an image-taking lens is obtained by a second imaging element 16. Image at a position of the tracking target within the object image is stored in a memory 19d as a template image (reference image). Based on the object image repeatedly acquired by the second imaging element 16 and on the template image, the position of the target image within the image-taking screen page is repeatedly detected (image tracking function). Furthermore, a defocusing amount (focus adjustment condition) of the imaging lens is detected, with respect to a focus detection area set within the imaging screen page (AF function), and also based on at least any one of detection results obtained by the image-tracking function and a detection result obtained by the AF function, a focus detection area for focal accommodation of the imaging lens is determined to perform the focal accommodation of the image-taking lens, depending on the defocusing amount of the focus detection area determined. Then, when the focus detection area for focal accommodation is a preset initial AF area, an image in the initial AF area within the target object is set as a new template image, thus altering the template image of the memory 19d.
