PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an authentication system which reduces time and effort in updating information stored in an authentication server, and reduces the time for interrupting authentication during update. SOLUTION: The authentication system is provided with a client terminal unit for transmitting authentication request including authentication information, and two or more server terminal units for storing registration information used for authentication. Each server terminal performs the authentication by checking whether the registration information stored therein matches the authentication information with respect to the authentication information contained in this authentication request when the authentication request is received, and inquires whether verification by the authentication information has succeeded in other server terminal units when the authentication fails. Then, if the registration information is sent from other server terminal units, this registration information is stored.
