PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve restart performance of a lamp using microwaves. SOLUTION: Since the lamp using microwaves can be lit with extremely minute power, a lamp power attenuation period in which lamp power is gradually reduced is set in a process of changing over a lit state to an extinguished state, thereafter a power reduction period in which a discharge lamp is lit with power lower than rated lighting power is set, whereby the lamp can be lit until the lamp temperature is dropped to a value allowing restart by setting a period in which the lamp is lit with extremely minute power, and restart performance is improved.
