<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of accurately detecting multiple feed of a medium to be recorded. <P>SOLUTION: When a plurality of sheets of paper advance to and/or separate from a transfer position in a multiple feed state in which they are superposed on each other, advance timing of each paper to the transfer position or separation timing thereof from the transfer position is lagged generally, so that impedance between a transfer means and an image carrier changes in a multistage state. Based on the above, voltage and/or current applied during transfer is detected, and when the detected value changes in a plurality of stages, it is discriminated as a situation that the multiple feed occurs.
