<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus that has a tray supporting a process cartridge and allows the replacement of the cartridge by pulling the tray out of the image forming apparatus, wherein the image forming apparatus is made compact by minimizing an amount by which the train moves perpendicular to a transfer belt, thereby reducing space required in the main body of the apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: The apparatus is provided with a holding member constituted so that the cartridge tray moves parallel to the transfer belt when the cartridge moves in a direction orthogonal to the transfer belt.
