PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a proximity sensor capable of self-diagnosing oscillation mode and predicting failure on the basis of the self-diagnosis. SOLUTION: The proximity sensor is provided with: a noncontact sensor part 12 for detecting an object to be detected without contact with the object to be detected; an oscillation sensor part 20 for detecting the oscillation mode of the proximity sensor; a sensor processing part 14 for processing the detection of the object to be detected on the basis of sensor signals of the noncontact sensor part 12; and a self-diagnosis part 22 for performing such self-diagnosis as to whether the oscillation mode is set mode or not on the basis of sensor signals of the oscillation sensor part 20 and such self-diagnosis as to predict that the detection cannot be normally maintained and will fail when the oscillation mode which is not set mode continues.
