A hybrid vehicle has a powershift transmission having two input clutches 40, 45 wherein a method of performing a gearshift from a current gear to a target gear comprises in step 100 disengaging one clutch 40, in step 102 releasing a drive connection between the current gear and an output 24, in step 104 opening the other clutch 45, in step 116, for example, disengaging fifth gear and engaging third gear, in step 118 use an electric machine 22 (e.g. ERAD) to produce torque at the output 24, in step 126 torque transfer from the electric machine 22 to the clutch 45 occurs and in step 130 the clutch 45 is fully engaged. An integrated starter/generator (CISG) (18, fig 1) may be provided and the electric machine 22 may be an electric rear wheel axle which provides torque and regenerative recovery of kinetic energy through braking. |
