A pneumatically operated percussion rock drill including means for supplying cleaning water to the bore hole comprises a compressed air throttle valve 28 and a water pressure regulating valve member 58 controlled by the compressed air. In operation compressed air passes via bore 80, annular passage 82 and bore 84 into chamber 62 to act on and displace a piston 64 to which the valve member is attached. Removal of the valve member from its seat 44 enables water to flow from conduit 86 via bore 88, passage 90, and apertures 92 to a water pipe 48, and via bore 94 in the valve member to chamber 65. The water in chamber 65 acts on the piston to move it against the force of the compressed air until a balance is reached. When the throttle valve is closed the bore 80 communicates via slot 100 with the atmosphere. The valve regulates the cleaning water supply pressure automatically proportional to the drill operating pressure and prevents water leakage to the drill operating mechanism in the event of leakage of the seal 46.</p> |
