The process of Specification 1,021,608 for obtaining discrete polyamide particles of relative viscosity at least 1À8 by precondensing specified phenol diesters of iso- and/or terephthalic acid with equivalent quantities of a primary aliphatic or araliphatic diamine at 20‹ to 150‹ C. in an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent and completing the polymerization as a suspension in the same or a higher boiling non-solvent liquid at 170‹ to 350‹ C., near but below the melting range of the polyamide is modified by using as the amine reactant a mixture of a primary aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or araliphatic diamine and an amido amine which mixture results from substantially completely reacting an amount of an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid which constitutes a minor equivalent proportion of total dicarboxylic acid (aliphatic plus phthalic in the diester) with the whole of the diamine equivalent to the total dicarboxylic acid. Specified aliphatic acids are oxalic, adipic, azelaic, sebacic, dodecanoic and dimerized fatty acids. Other features, such as the modification using diesters of substituted phthalic acids are as described in the parent Specification except that the exemplification of the diamines is more extensive and includes 2-methyl-pentamethylene and trimethylhexamethylene diamines, 4,4 - diamino - bis - cyclohexylmethane and 1 - amino - 3 - aminomethyl - 3,5,5 - trimethylcyclohexane.
