The display unit has a digital display (32) e.g. LED, comprising a variable scale (40) that is provided with a scale point and a numerical value, where the position of the scale point and/or numerical value changes with an increasing or decreasing distance between a measuring device (10) and a target object. The null point of the scale lies outside a measuring area, and the orientation of the scale is changed relative to the display unit, where the display is arranged parallel to an installation edge of a housing (12) of the measuring device.
