Fluid drying and/or filtering apparatus, of particular use for drying air, comprises a drying and/or filtering cartridge, containing for example silicon gel and/or wire wool, located in a mounting in the fluid flow line, and so adapted that the cartridge may be replaced when expended by pressing a fresh cartridge against it to expel the used cartridge and replace it with the fresh one without loss of pressure in the flow line. Thus cartridge 5a of rectangular cross-section is located in the flow line defined by ports 4 in mounting 1 (see Fig. 2). When expended, fresh cartridge 5b is pressed down Qn top of it, thereby expelling used cartridge 5a, loss of fluid being prevented by means of tight resilient seals 9. In Figs. 4, 4A, the mounting comprises a hollow cylinder 17 with entry and outlet ports 16. Cartridge 18 has ports 19 which register with ports 16 and sealing rings 20. A used cartridge is expelled by urging a fresh cartridge along tube 17 against it. To prevent gas pressure within tube 17 tending to force the fresh and used cartridges apart, cartridge 18 may have a screwthreaded socket at one end and a corresponding spigot at the other end (see Figs. 7-9, not shown). In other embodiments, the pressure loss-preventing seals are contained in the body of the mounting (see Figs. 5, 5A, not shown), and a tray-type transfer device is used to accommodate both the in-use and unused cartridge (see Fig. 6, not shown). In yet another embodiment (see Fig. 10, not shown), the sealing means preventing loss of pressure during replacement consists of ball valves (41) located in ports (40) of mounting (38). Fresh cartridge (42) is slid at right angles to the paper into position in the mounting, and then raised by lever (45) whereby spigots (44) lift the ball valves off their seatings and permit fluid flow to be resumed.</p> |
