PITCH-BASED CARBON FOAM HEAT SINK WITH PHASE CHANGE MATERIAL

The present invention relates to a process for producing carbon foam for hea t sinks without the need for conventional oxidation stabilization. There is provided a process comprising: (1) heating a liquified pitch under non-oxidizing, superatmospheric conditio ns below about 500.degree. C. sufficient to produce a carbon foam; (2) coking said carbon foam by heating said carbon foam at a temperature abo ve about 500.degree. C. under non-oxidizing, superatmospheric conditions; (3) heating the coked carbon foam under conditions sufficient to produce a substantially graphitic carbon foam; and (4) at least partially filling porous regions in the substantially graphitic carbon foam with a phase-change material.
