A gusset opener comprising a spring wire 15 connected to the tip of a movable slotted fi nger 10 is provided in a machine for manufacturing square bottom gusseted plastics bags to separate the inner plies of a gusset 6 unintentionally weakly bonded together during gusset sealing of a continuously fed, longitudinally folded, thermoplastics web 5, e.g. polythene. As shown, the wire 15 extends from the finger 10 which penetrates the gusset 6 upstream of a heatsealing/cutting station 2 to pass along the inner fold of the gusset past the apex of a V-shaped sealer/cutter 3. Downstream of the sealer 3, the wire curves away from the inner fold to be connected to a slotted movable member 16 slidably connected to the arm 23 of an L-shaped bracket, the curved portion of the wire producing ply separation as the web 5 travels in the direction of arrow 7. A rotating support 4 removes the triangular cut-outs from the gusset 6. The finger 10 which may be wedge-shaped and the wire 15 which may be steel and may pass through a notch in the shoe of the sealer 3, may be provided with a non-stick coating, e.g. P.T.F.E., or copolymers thereof, and may be welded together. The gusset opener may be used with a machine for making bags from layflat tubing having two opposed longitudinal gusset folds. |
